This weeks Hebrew learning

I've been working for the past week on Hebrew lesson plans--with the help of my diligent disciples {a.k.a. "the kids"}, Microsoft Paint & Word and some fabulous websites {whose webmistresses have taken virtually all of the work out of this process- Bless you, Loni!}

We have been creating and collecting resources for learning the alphabet {ahem, aleph-bet}, days, months, numbers, seasons, & weather. Each week we are going to learn a blessing & focus on a name of YHVH.

We follow the Karaite Calendar (which differs from the Jewish calendar in that the new year is based upon the Abib state and month by new moons instead of rabbinic law}. New Moon Sightings & Abib in Jerusalem.

Why do we follow this calendar instead of the traditional Jewish one?

"You have made the moon to mark the seasons." ~Psalms 104:19
"These are the appointed times of YHVH, set-apart convocations which you shall proclaim at the times appointed for them." ~Leviticus 23:4

Found some great links for the Counting of the Omer.

Here are some printable charts for Counting the Omer {Sefirat Ha'omer}. Keep in mind these are from a Jewish site, thus the Omer count starts and ends on different days, but the charts are great (and show Hebrew numbers) nonetheless.

To "count the omer", I printed 50 of these grain sheaf clipart images (well cut & pasted 50 then printed one page ;P

just a sampling

It has been a while since I have posted on here. I have felt I have had very little advice to offer or tidbits of wisdom to share. Our homeschooling journey this year has been quite interesting, replete with many many failures and Elohim's blessings. My worldview has changed, and stepping out in faith to homeschool felt like quite a catalyst. Having to choose what to "teach" my children, deciding how to train them in a way that is tolerable for all of us {since we now spend a majority of time with eachother}, and knowing that I have a duty to not only the Lord, my boys, husband and myself, but to their future wives, children, employers/coworkers, and friends, is a frightening and humbling experience.

Luckily, there are many godly mothers {and fathers, and children} who DO have wonderful wisdom from which we can glean, as well as some fabulous resources offering their services freely or cheaply. Here is just a sampling:

Paperback Swap {dot} com-- List books you currently have in your home. Search other users' books. Earn credits each time you swap a book which you can use to purchase other books. Sellers pay shipping costs {books are shipped media mail, which is quite cheap}.

I have found old McGuffey's Readers, Singapore Math books, Usborne books, vintage comics and unique cookbooks, among other great titles.

Donna Young-- every imaginable form for household, school, finance management, you can find here for free

Heart of the Matter-- An online community for Christian homeschoolers. You will find articles here on everything from Biblical mothering to choosing a curriculum to giveaways.

The Homeschool Lounge-- A 12,000 plus member community. There are various forums and groups to suit many different homeschooling lifestyles.
